I Want To Know If My Specific Problem Can Be Solved With Six Month Smiles Treatment?
Q.
Hello Dr Hughes, My dentist recently told me I have a “relatively mild malocclusion involving a class 2 division, 1 incisor relationship with a 6mm overjet and a 2mm midline diastema in the upper arch”. I was wondering if I would be able to get jaw surgery for the overjet or would braces alone fix that problem. Also would 6 month smiles fix it or do you think having braces on for about a year or 2 will be better. My dentist has not said anything yet about it so I want a second opinion. Thanks.

Thanks for your questions. To correct a 6mm overjet and ‘mild’ Class II occlusion then it’s unlikely that you’d need surgery – however this may not be possible with 6 month smiles as that treatment is designed to work on the front teeth and not correct the bite fully. In some cases an overjet can be treated with 6 month smiles but we’d need to assess you in person.

I would advise that you seek advice from a specialist Orthodontist who can also comment on other types of treatment choices. Kind regards, Dr Mark Hughes.
