Can the cement for bonding wire retainers cause lips to be sore?

Q.
Mark, can the cement used to bond bonded wire retainers to the teeth after orthodontic treatment cause a sore mouth and lips? I’ve had to have it redone at a different orthodontic practice as it had worn over time but since i’ve had it done my lips feel sore and inflamed. The cement feels smooth but its a different feeling of smooth as to how the cement felt in my mouth previously from when it was first done. Have you seen this at all in patients and whats the best thing to do – thanks

Hi, and thanks for your question

How long ago was the procedure redone? The materials used to bond to the teeth can soemtime cause some irritation and swelling of the soft tissues in your mouth, but I’d expect anything like that to subside within a few days.

It’s bound to feel a little different when a new dentist carries out the procedure as we all do things slightly differently

If the problem persists I’d go back and ask the orthodontist to take a look

Hope that helps

Mark
