Yorkshire dental services have been boosted following the completion of a multi-million pound refurbishment of Leeds Dental Institute.

The 15 million pound project was launched to improve teaching and training in the area and provide excellent research facilities. The new institute is now one of the best educational facilities in Europe and student numbers have now doubled. Students can now learn in a state of the art centre, which features a brand new curriculum and a unique dental mannequin unit.

The funding came quickly after an increase in the budget for NHS dental services across the country; the extra money was provided to address problems with NHS provision and improve access to dental services and increase standards of care.

The director of the institute, Margret Kellett said she was extremely pleased with the finished product and was delighted with the increase in student numbers. Mrs Kellett went on to praise the new curriculum, which has been approved according to European standards. The new programme encourages students to combine academic study with practical work from day one.

In addition to facilities at the Leeds Dental Institute, students are also helping training at new outreach centres in Beeston and Bradford; a new centre is due to open in Hull in the coming weeks.
