A dental practice in York has donated a defibrillator to a local football team.

Thorpe Dental Group donated the automatic external defibrillator to Poppleton Junior FC in addition to a package, which provides training for ten coaches. The move harks back to former Bolton Wanderers player, Fabrice Muamba, when he almost lost his life after suffering a heart attack on the pitch at White Hart Lane in a match against Spurs. Muamba’s heart stopped for well over an hour, but the quick response of medical staff at the ground and cardiac specialists at the hospital saved his life.

Principal dentist, Dr Kris Leeson, is a fan of Bolton and wanted to make the donation, as he is aware of the difference a defibrillator can make and the practice is a keen supported of community projects and local sports teams.

Coach of Poppleton’s under-15 team, the Poppleton Panthers, Mike Walter, said that the donation marks an ideal time to raise awareness of the importance of having access to a defibrillator. Mr Walter added that he hopes there will never be a situation where the device is used, but if a situation does arise, it’s reassuring to know that it could help to save somebody’s life. Mr Walter also stressed the importance of staff training, especially as cardiac arrests can happen very quickly and unexpectedly.
