A woman from Newcastle has been given £10,000 in compensation after her dentist failed to spot extensive dental problems.

Victoria Walker visited her dentist in Newcastle for six monthly check-ups over a three year period and was never told that she had extensive dental health problems, including gum disease. Mrs Walker was only told about the problems when she moved and started seeing a dentist in Teesside; her new dentist spotted a number of problems during the first check-up, including an advanced case of gum disease, which had caused her teeth to become loose.

Victoria Walker was shocked to hear the news, especially after numerous routine check-ups, dental X-rays and screenings at the practice in Newcastle. Her new dentist immediately referred her for treatment at a local dental hospital and stressed that she must get treatment as quickly as possible in order to save her teeth.

Victoria recently got married and is now expecting her first child; however, she says the last few months have been very difficult because she has had time off work and experienced prolonged periods of pain due to intensive treatment for gum disease; she also had to have a number of teeth extracted.

Simon Elliman, Mrs Walker’s solicitor, said that Victoria’s case was not isolated and unfortunately similar cases are becoming more common. Fortunately, Victoria’s condition was diagnosed before she ended up losing all her teeth; however, some people are not so lucky and go for years without diagnosis and subsequent treatment.

Victoria Walker has now been given £10,000 in compensation for her ordeal.
