Wolverhampton dentist issues warning over unsupervised orthodontic treatment

A Wolverhampton dentist has issued a warning over the safety of unsupervised orthodontic treatment.

Dr Chetan Sharma has joined dental professionals across the country to raise awareness of the potential dangers of direct-to-consumer braces. In recent years, the braces, which can be purchased online, have become increasingly popular. Customers receive a set of aligners based on moulds they make at home. Rather than going to a dentist or an orthodontist to have their braces fitted and attending regular in-chair check-ups, patients have access to dentists online.

Dr Sharma said that not having braces is a safer option than undergoing unsupervised treatment. Braces should be fitted to the individual and patients should have a thorough consultation before they begin treatment to assess their suitability and identify the best treatment options. During treatment, the braces should be adjusted by a trained professional, he explained.

Direct-to-consumer braces have become popular largely due to the low cost and convenience of treatment and targeted marketing campaigns. Dr Sharma warned that despite the speed and value, they pose serious risks to health and well-being. Poorly fitted braces can increase the risk of pain and irritation and undergoing treatment without expert supervision can elevate the risk of decay, gum disease, infections and abscesses.

One patient Dr Sharma saw had gum disease before starting treatment. Unfortunately, as the patient chose to go down the direct-to-consumer route, the symptoms were not detected and they started wearing the aligners. The symptoms got worse, the teeth started to become loose and they ended up losing their teeth. They needed surgery and will need ongoing care for gum disease.

Dr Sharma has encouraged anyone who is thinking about getting braces to book a consultation with a registered, experienced dentist.
