Wirral Dental Nurse Devotes Free Time to Helping Dementia Cause

A dental nurse from the Wirral is devoting her free time to supporting a nationwide campaign to support those affected by dementia.

42-year old Jan Sumner has leant her support to the Side by Side programme, which connects volunteers with people suffering from dementia. Jan decided to join the scheme, which is run by the Alzheimer’s Society, to make a positive impact on individuals living with Alzheimer’s. The programme provides one-to-one support for those who may struggle to connect with the wider community and those who feel isolated in their own homes.

Jan was inspired to help out as her husband’s grandma has suffered from dementia for over a decade and she has seen the effects the illness can have on patients. She now supports a lady in the local area, but her help is benefiting the whole family. Her husband is able to enjoy a bit of respite because he trusts Jan and he knows his wife is in safe hands. Jan, who works at Moreton Dental Care, has already organised a Dementia Friends session for her work colleagues and the team also completed a charity walk to Hilbre Island, which raised around £500.

Moreton Dental Care has recently been accepted as a member of Wirral Dementia Action Alliance.

Jan said that she is really pleased that she made the decision to get in touch with the Alzheimer’s Society and encouraged others to do the same. Often, even a chat from time to time can make the world of difference to people who feel lonely and cut off as a result of dementia.
