A dental team from Weymouth has raised hundreds of pounds to help people in Turkey and Syria who have been affected by the recent earthquake.

The team from DK Dental Practice & Lab has already organised one charity day and is currently working on another fundraising event to donate to the Penny Appeal. The fundraiser was set up shortly after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit parts of Turkey and Syria in February. More than 50,000 people were killed and thousands more were injured. People lost their homes and livelihoods and many are surviving in very basic conditions.

The first charity day took place on March 3rd and another event is planned for Wednesday March 15th. The team is hoping to continue organising activities and adding to the pot. Dental nurse, Kayleigh Phelps, said that everyone is keen to keep the money coming in to support those who have lost their homes and jobs and families who are suffering from grief and loss.

Dr Sarah Banuri, principal dentist, has done a lot of charity work in the past supporting projects in countries, such as Afghanistan. For the team, it was a natural response to start planning fundraising events as soon as the news hit.

Kayleigh explained that she had seen on the news that a donation of £50 could ensure access to secure accommodation for two families. The team has already raised hundreds of pounds but the goal is to keep going to support as many people as possible. The earthquake caused damage worth an estimated £850 million.
