Weston-super-Mare dental practice to go private

A busy dental practice in Weston-super-Mare is set to go private, leaving patients looking for NHS dental care facing an anxious search for a new dentist.

Mydentist has contacted patients registered at its Beaconsfield Road practice to inform them that the clinic will be moving to a new private dentistry model from September.
Patients will have the option to sign up for a monthly membership plan or find alternative providers if they wish to continue receiving NHS care. The changes will come into force on September 1st.

In a letter to patients, dentist Dr Krisztina Kurjatko explained that it has been a tough decision but going private is the only way to ensure the highest possible standards of care for patients at this time. The practice will offer three payment plans, which are available at a cost of between £8.33 and £25.75 per month. The plans cover routine check-ups and hygiene treatments and don’t include treatments, such as fillings, extractions and crowns.

News of the changes has angered some residents. Paul Blackmore, 42, has been a patient at the practice for ten years but said that his mother and father-in-law, who live with him, have been unable to see a dentist for over six years due to a lack of NHS places in the area. The closure of NHS services will leave thousands more people in the town without a dentist, with most unable to afford private dental treatment.
