Welsh People Snacking On Wrong Foods For Good Oral Health Survey Reveals

A survey has revealed that Welsh people have patchy knowledge when it comes to choosing foods that are good and bad for oral health.

In a survey conducted by the British Dental Health Foundation, many people in Wales said that cheese was a bad snacking option and dried and fresh fruit were good options, which is in fact, wrong. Cheese is a healthy snacking option in terms of oral health because it does not contain much sugar and it is a good source of calcium; both fresh and dried fruits are sugary, which can lead to erosion and wear of the protective enamel.

Dr Nigel Carter OBE, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, said that the survey revealed that most people are aware of which foods are good and bad for you, but there is a still a large number of people who are unaware of the link between diet and oral health.

In light of the survey results, Dr Carter has urged people to think about their diet and learn about the impact diet can have on oral health. Snacking is a major problem, as Dr Carter said that more and more people are choosing to graze throughout the day, rather than sticking to three square meals a day and this means that the teeth are under constant acid attack, as plaque acids are released by bacteria in the mouth when you eat. Dr Carter recommended eating three meals a day and snacking on foods that are free from sugar, such as raw vegetables and cheese; he also advised drinking water after a meal and avoiding sugary and acidic foods and drinks outside of mealtimes.
