Watford Practice Offers Free Mouth Cancer Screening

A Watford dental practice is offering free oral cancer screening, as part of Mouth Cancer Action Month.

Senova Dental Studio on Beechen Road is providing free screening checks throughout November and everyone is invited to make the most of the opportunity, with appointments available for people who are not registered with the practice, as well as registered patients.

Jay Padayachy, a dentist at the practice, said that it was important that people check their mouth for symptoms of mouth cancer in the same way that they check other parts of the body. He added that in most cases, the disease can be cured if it is caught at an early stage.

The practice ran a screening programme last year and is hoping to build on the success by seeing as many people as possible during the course of the month. The screening tests are very simple and quick and do not cause any pain. The dentist simply uses an instrument called a Veloscope to have a look around the mouth and check for symptoms of mouth cancer, which include red or white patches in the mouth, abnormal swelling in the mouth or throat and slow-healing ulcers.

The campaign, which is organised by the British Dental Health Foundation, aims to raise awareness of mouth cancer and encourage as many people as possible to have a screening test. Mouth Cancer Action Month will run throughout November.
