A dental hygienist from Warrington has beaten off competition from around the country to win the Most Outstanding Dental Team Member of the Year 2014 at the Dentistry Awards.

Jo Dickinson, from Coppice Green, was crowned the winner of the prestigious award at the ceremony in Leicester, which took place recently. Jo was praised for her commitment and dedication to promoting good oral health in the community.

Speaking of her amazing achievement, Jo said that she is very passionate about her job and she is particularly interested in targeting groups in the community, including the elderly. As we age, our oral health tends to deteriorate and Jo is eager to ensure local community members have access to the care they need.

Jo’s aim is to work with care workers and local health professionals to set up training sessions so that they can learn more about oral health, help elderly people with oral hygiene and learn about how gum disease can impact the rest of the body.

In addition to helping older people in the community, Jo was also one of three hygienists to set up the UK’s first mentoring scheme for therapists and hygienists who have recently qualified. She did this in response to a shortage of programmes aimed specifically at hygienists. Jo has also campaigned to enable dental professionals to take on a more comprehensive role in helping people to quit smoking.
