A dental clinic, which caters and cares for mentally disabled patients has been given a reprieve, it has been announced.

The clinic, which is located at the Fernald Developmental Center was due to close due to a lack of funding; however, the clinic will now remain open for at least another twelve months. It is believed that the centre will close in the future but will remain open while representatives find alternative arrangements for the disabled patients that visit the dental clinic.

The Waltham dental clinic currently cares for over 2,000 patients with mental disabilities; the clinic is run in conjunction with Tufts University and provides specialist care, which patients would struggle to find elsewhere, especially on short notice.

When the announcement that the clinic was facing closure was made, relatives, patients and members of the Fernald League for the Retarded were concerned that the patients would not be able to get the kind of care they need and would be faced with long trips to get specialist treatment.

Now the clinic has been given a reprieve, representatives from Tufts University have time to arrange alternative care facilities and programmes for the patients; this twelve month period will allow them to find the best possible solution for the patients and will ensure the patients receive excellent specialist care in the future.
