A dentist from Wakefield has highlighted the dangers of vaping.

Dr Affan Saghir, the owner of Space Dentistry, has encouraged patients to avoid smoking and vaping to protect their oral health. The leading cosmetic dentist said that most people are aware of the dangers of smoking cigarettes, but many are in the dark over the risks of vaping.

While vaping can be beneficial for smokers who are trying to quit, there are concerns over the impact of vaping on people who don’t smoke, particularly teenagers and young people. Buying vaping products is illegal for under 18s but data shows that vaping has become increasingly popular among teens.

Smoking increases the risk of gum disease, oral cancer and tooth staining but vaping is not without risk, Dr Saghir explained. Using vaping products can cause swollen gums and elevate the risk of bruxism (tooth grinding). This is due to nicotine stimulating the muscles in the jaw.

To coincide with National Smile Month, which runs between May 17th and June 17th, Dr Saghir is urging local people to care for their teeth and gums by making regular dental appointments, practising good oral hygiene, moderating the intake of sugary and acidic foods and protecting the teeth when playing sport. Dr Saghir also recommends avoiding rinsing after brushing the teeth and chewing sugar-free gum after eating. It’s also beneficial to wait at least 45 minutes after eating and drinking to brush the teeth. This reduces the risk of enamel wear and erosion.
