Volunteer clinic gets two year grant

A volunteer medical clinic in Charles County has been given a two year grant to provide dental services to uninsured patients.

The grant, which is worth $120,000, will enable the Health Partners clinic to expand its existing dental service. The money will be spent on adding to the team; a part-time hygienist and a dental assistant will join the centre, which will allow dentists to focus on providing restorative care.

Christine Mulcahey, the executive director of Health Partners, said that the grant would make a huge difference to the clinic. The money will enable the clinic to reach out into the local community and target those who need dental treatment the most. Currently, millions of people across America are struggling to afford dental care due to rising costs, increasing unemployment rates and a lack of dental insurance. Health Partners is aiming to increase its capacity to treat uninsured patients and the money will enable them to cater for around 430 low-income patients; the clinic currently sees around 175.

Local residents are delighted at the news and are looking forward to benefitting from the new services offered by the clinic. For many, the clinic is the only hope of accessing affordable dental care.
