A dentist from New York has been fined and banned after botching several dental procedures, it has been revealed.

Dr Deepika Reddy, from East Syracuse Family Dental Arts in New York has been fined $1000 and banned from practising endodontics until she has completed a retraining course. A total of seven patients complained after being treated by Reddy between 2005 and 2010; patients were left with pain and infections and two even suffered jaw fractures. One patient had come in for a simple cleaning treatment but Reddy told them that a tooth needed to be extracted and subsequently went on to remove the tooth, which was firmly rooted in the jaw bone; as a result, the jaw was fractured.

Three patients also complained that instruments were left in their mouths after root canal treatment. The court heard that Dr Reddy had undertaken procedures she was not skilled enough to perform and left instruments in patients’ mouths after root canal procedures. In one case, Reddy also failed to remove decayed tissue during a root canal procedure and the patient suffered from pain for two years.

Dr Reddy has now been fined $1,000 and ordered to attend retraining courses at the University of Buffalo Dental School. She will then work under probationary conditions for three further years.

Reddy did not contest the charges of misconduct and negligence.
