The College of Dental Medicine at the University of New England has officially opened its doors. The new, state of the art dental school is the only dental college in the North of New England.

The school, which is located on the university’s Portland Campus, will provide exceptional training and learning facilities for students, starting with an inaugural class of 64, which is made up of students from Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire, as well as 16 students from other US states and Canada. Students will take their classes in the new $14 million Oral Health Center, which is located just off Stevens Avenue.

Funding for the new dental school was received from a number of sources, including the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention and Northeast Delta Dental.

Dean of the College of Dental Medicine, James Koelbl, said that students in their fourth year of study will take part in an expansive clinical outreach programme, which will enable them to provide reduced-rate treatment to thousands of patients each year, as well as giving them the opportunity to hone their clinical skills and get used to the world of work. Mr Koelbl said that he is anticipating that staff members and student will be able to treat up to 15,000 patients per year at the campus clinic, as well as 25,000 patients in the community.

The opening of the school will have a major impact on the local area and will be particularly beneficial for those struggling to access affordable dental care.
