University dental course fees face hike

Dentistry students could soon be forced to reach deeper into their pockets to fund their education.

The government have been advised to increase tuition fees for certain undergraduate degrees including law, medicine and dentistry.

The report, which was submitted to ministers, also suggested that many students thought the proposal to pay more for ‘prestige’ degrees was a good idea, as it would mean that they would earn higher salaries.

However, critics of the report suggest that the recommendations could freeze-out students from poorer backgrounds if they were implemented.

Conducted by the Institute for Employment Studies, the report tested hypothetical scenarios on 81 wanna-be students.

It discovered that only a few students would actually pay higher fees for places at elite educational establishments.

The National Union of Students condemned the report saying that high fees would see more students having to get financial support from their parents.
