UMDNJ students set for rise in tuition fees

Students at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey are bracing themselves, after it was announced that tuition fees will increase significantly.

Officials at the school said that students from all departments are facing increases in their tuition fees as a result of cuts in state funding. The planned increases were approved by the board of trustees earlier this week.

All students will face larger bills; however, some will be worse affected than others. Out of state medical and dental students will be hit hardest, with increases of around 21 percent expected; residents of New Jersey will see their fees increase by 18 percent. Fees for the courses will now stand at $49,657 for out of state students and $30,948 for state residents per year.

Graduates and student nurses will also face rising costs, with increases of between 4 and 18 percent expected to be announced in the near future.

The increase in fees will make the university one of the most expensive in America; many of the students are now facing tuition fees of over $30,000 each year, with some paying almost $50,000 each year.

Students at the university have reacted angrily to the announcement and many are now concerned about how they are going to raise the additional funds; for those that cannot rely on the generosity of their parents or relatives, this is a real problem, especially as the increases are expected to come in as soon as September.

Officials from the university say they regret having to raise fees but they have little option after the state cut funding by around 22 percent.
