Two new dental practices are set to open in the town of Dumfries, it has been announced.

Health officials have revealed that the former post office on Great King Street will now be converted into a dental surgery, along with another new surgery, which will open on Castle Street. The Blue Door NHS Family Dental Practice on Castle Street will open in July and the new post office practice will open in September. The post office closed in 2006, despite local objections and protests and has been empty since; local residents are pleased that the site is being used to help the community in a different way and are looking forward to the opening of the new surgery.

The new practices will help to reduce waiting lists in the local area from 1,846 to just 300. Dental health and access to local dental services were identified as important issues by local residents and people were relieved and pleased to hear the latest announcement from the local NHS trust.

In previous years, health officials in the area have experienced problems and challenges with reference to access to NHS dental services; however, Valerie White, consultant in Dental Public Health, says that a great deal of investment has been poured into the area in order to improve local services and support local residents. In the future, patients in Dumfries will have more choice.

Both new practices will participate in the ‘child smile’ programme, which aims to promote good oral health amongst younger children and educate them about oral hygiene, healthy eating and taking care of their teeth and gums.
