New research has revealed that two glasses of wine contain the equivalent of a day’s worth of sugar.

Analysis by Alcohol Health Alliance UK suggests that drinking two glasses of wine is sufficient to reach the recommended daily intake of sugar for adults. A team at an independent laboratory evaluated the sugar content of more than 30 different UK bottles of wine, including white, red, rose, sparkling and fruit wines.

Some of the products contained up to 59g of sugar, which is more than a glazed doughnut. None of the bottles carried nutritional information labels, but one-fifth had information about calorie content.

In light of the findings, Alcohol Health Alliance UK is calling for a change in the law, which would require manufacturers to provide additional information about sugar and calorie content.

NHS guidelines currently recommend a maximum daily intake of 30g of free sugars for adults. Free sugars include sugars that are added to food or drink, including smoothies and juices.

Analysis by Alcohol Health Alliance UK indicates that an adult in the UK can reach the recommended daily sugar intake by consuming two medium-sized glasses of some of the wines before they have even taken any meals, snacks or other drinks into account. Data suggested that some of the lower strength wines contained the most sugar.

There are currently no regulations or rules that require producers to provide nutritional information or health warnings on bottles of wine.

A survey carried out by YouGov in 2021 showed that more than 60% of people would like bottles of wine to have labels with calorie content and over 50% wanted more information about sugar content.
