A TV dentist has shared tips to help patients to get appointments.

Appearing on ITV’s Lorraine show during a feature on DIY dentistry, Dr Surina Sehgal spoke to Christine Lampard about the current situation and offered advice to help those struggling to see a dentist.

Patients who have dental issues who are trying to get a dental appointment should carry on calling their regular practice frequently, Dr Sehgal advised. Practices usually reserve some emergency appointments every day and they may also have cancellations, so it’s worth calling regularly if you are desperate for an appointment. If you don’t have a dentist, or you can’t get an urgent appointment with your regular dentist, Dr Sehgal recommends calling NHS 111.

The operators at NHS 111 can offer advice about pain relief and they can also refer patients for emergency dental care if they have severe symptoms.
Dr Sehgal also advised viewers to consider taking out dental insurance to help with the cost of treatment. Surveys show that a growing number of people are avoiding going to the dentist due to cost, and figures are likely to increase, as living costs continue to skyrocket. Insurance can help patients to keep costs down and provide peace of mind if they do need treatment.

During the segment, Christine also asked Dr Sehgal about recent viral TikTok trends. While some posts can be helpful, Dr Sehgal warned that online advice isn’t always accurate. She recommends checking with a dental professional before trying anything that has become popular on platforms like TikTok. Dentists have previously issued warnings over online trends, including bleaching the teeth at home and filing the teeth down.
