Trowbridge Dentist Hosting Weekend Oral Cancer Screening

Sample News Big

A dental practice in Trowbridge is offering oral cancer screening checks this weekend, to encourage people to get checked out.

Free screening tests will be available at Mortimer Dental Practice on Mortimer Street between 10:30 am and 1:30 pm this Saturday and patients do not have to make an appointment. Checks will be available to everyone, including patients who are not registered at the practice.

The campaign is being supported by Jenny Wills, the mother of 12 year old Connor Robinson, who was diagnosed with a rare form of mouth cancer and sadly passed away last January. Miss Wills said that anything that raises the profile of oral cancer and encourages people to get checked out and keep an eye out for signs and symptoms should be encouraged.

Oral cancer is becoming increasingly prevalent, with the number of cases doubling in the last decade. Dentists and health experts are eager to raise awareness of the disease and encourage people to look out for symptoms, including red or white patches in the mouth, lumps in the throat and slow-healing ulcers.

Despite the number of cases increasing year on year, public awareness of the disease is still relatively low and as a result of this most cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage. Early detection can help to improve survival rates dramatically.
