A leading dentist has issued advice to those eager to protect their smiles. Dr Richard Marques, from Doctor Richard London, stressed that thinking about when to brush the teeth is as important as remembering to brush twice a day.

Many people brush their teeth after eating but Dr Marques has urged the public to try and avoid brushing directly after eating or drinking to protect the enamel. Dr Marques said that it doesn’t matter whether people brush before or after eating, but it is essential to think about how long to wait before brushing after consuming food or drink.

For those who clean their teeth before eating, it’s beneficial to wait at least 10 minutes after brushing to eat. When brushing after eating, it’s important to wait at least 30 minutes.

This is because when we eat, bacteria in the mouth release acids, which temporarily weaken the enamel. Brushing while the enamel is soft can increase the risk of cavities and sensitivity. The enamel is very hard and resistant but once it is worn or damaged, it cannot be repaired.

Waiting to clean the teeth after eating provides an opportunity for the enamel to remineralise and harden, which protects the teeth. It is also beneficial to try to avoid eating between meals to lower the number of daily acid attacks.
