A strongman from New York who once lifted 475lbs with his teeth has died aged 104.

Joe Rollino, also known as Mighty Joe Rollino , Great Joe Rollino and the World’s Strongest Man, was walking in Brooklyn on 11 January 2010 when he was hit by a truck and he died later in hospital.

Big Joe, who was born on 19 March 1905, only weighed around 150lbs and stood 5ft5 at his largest but his fetes of strength were legendary.

Co-director of the University of Texas’s Stark Center for Physical Culture and Sports, Terry Todd, who was friends with Big Joe for more than 40 years, said that Rollino was pound for pound one of the greatest strongmen America had ever see.

Todd added Big Joe was so well trained that he could lift what a 400lbs man could which was remarkable.

Reports suggest that Big Joe stayed away from meat, cigarettes and alcohol and walked five miles every day no matter what the weather was doing.

He also boxed by the name of Kid Dundee, performed on Coney Island, worked as a longshoreman, and fought in the Second World War.

Big Joe once said that his biggest achievement was being able to lift 635lbs with his fingers.
