A tooth found in an unearthed skull is to be tested for a possible match with missing student, Lauren Spierer’s. The Indiana University student was classified as missing  in June last year.

The skull was discovered by a fisherman in the White River in July and is now undergoing DNA tests. Spierer’s disappeared from Bloomington, Indiana in June 2011 and the family is now waiting for information from forensic tests.

It could take up to two months for the skull to be identified, but testing the tooth will produce faster results. The discovery of the skull came shortly after Lauren’s mother, Charlene wrote an emotional open letter to the person she believed took and killed her daughter. Mrs Spierer’s wrote the letter to urge the person to come forward and said that she hopes the letter makes them feel “uncomfortable.”

Police have been frustrated during the investigation into Lauren’s disappearance. Within days of their investigation starting, several young men they were hoping would cooperate with the case hired defense lawyers, which prevented them from aiding the police. Charlene Spierer wrote that she could not understand why five young men felt the need to hire attorneys so soon after Lauren disappeared. Police also confirmed that there have been several false leads during the case.
