The amount of money left by the Tooth Fairy has reached a record high in the US.

A 2023 poll conducted by Delta Dental revealed that the average rate has increased from $5.36 per tooth to $6.23 (approximately £5). This equates to a rise of 16% and is the highest price on record.

Since the first Delta Dental Tooth Fairy giving survey, which was carried out 25 years ago, the average rate has risen by 379%. The cost per tooth started at $1.30 and is now over $6.20. At the current rate, children will be finding $30 under their pillows when they lose a tooth in the year 2048.

Gabriella Ferroni, senior director in strategic communications at Delta Dental Plans Association, said that the company has been analysing trends for 25 years as part of a campaign to raise awareness of oral health and hygiene habits. Based on the findings, the Tooth Fairy will need to save a lot of money in the coming years, with prices set to reach $30 within the next quarter of a century.

Trends in the US differ to those in the UK. Research by Dental Phobia shows that average Tooth Fairy donations have fallen as a result of the cost of living crisis. The latest statistics revealed that the average cost per tooth has decreased by up to 10% since 2018 to £1.90. In some parts of the country, for example, Kensington in London, the average rate is much higher at £5. Rates are lowest in the North East at £0.90 per tooth.
