Tooth-damage scam artist sentenced

A fraudster who submitted 21 false claims saying that he had damaged teeth while dining in restaurants has been sentenced.

Tod Schaffer, from Brookline, Massachusetts, submitted the fraudulent claims over a four-year period and was awarded more than $36,000 in compensation.

The 42-year-old will now have to serve 100 hours of community service after he pleaded guilty to the offences.

He defrauded the system by claiming that he had damaged his front teeth by biting into rocks or plastic while eating at a number of restaurant chains, which included TGI Friday.

As well as the community service, Schaffer was also ordered to pay restitution for his crime and not to enter the eateries he had scammed.

Reports suggest that insurance investigators believe he had devised his scam after actually injuring his tooth back while eating a salad in 2002.
