Tiger Suffers Heart Trouble During Dental Surgery

An endangered Amur tiger gave keepers and a team of highly trained veterinarians a scare, after suffering heart problems during dental surgery.

Sayan, a resident of Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster, was undergoing dental surgery when vets noticed that her vital signs dropped and her heart went into cardiac arrest. The three-year-old tiger was having a routine root canal operation, but suffered a very rare reaction.

Alan Tevendale, a vet involved in Sayan’s treatment, said that the team noticed that the tiger had no pulse or heart beat around two hours into the procedure. They worked quickly to giver her a cardiac massage and injected two shots of adrenaline directly into the heart muscle.

Thankfully, the urgent treatment worked and the team noticed that the tiger’s heart had started breathing again. After around five minutes she was taken off the ventilator and was able to breathe independently. Mr Tevendale said that it was “the most stressful experience” of his life and said that everyone was extremely relieved that Sayan has pulled through.

Keepers decided to call in the vet after they noticed that Sayan was acting grumpily and an examination determined that she needed root canal treatment.
