Thousands of PRSI cardholders in the Republic of Ireland aren’t taking advantage of dental and optical benefits, new research has confirmed.

Around 2.5 million people pay into the PRSI scheme, but up to two-thirds have not accessed the perks available to them. Recent statistics show that there were fewer than 805,000 applications for dental treatments under the scheme last year. Treatments covered by the programme include one free dental check per year, but the figures suggest that the vast majority of people are forgoing an annual appointment. Dentists recommend at least one routine check every 12 months.

The dental benefits that were part of the PRSI scheme before the recession hit and cuts were made were reinstated in 2016, but the research shows that most people aren’t taking advantage of discounted rates. In addition to one free check per year, PRSI cardholders can also receive a payment of 42 euros towards a scale and polish and periodontal treatment, with a total cap of 15 euros for charges that exceed this amount.

According to a survey conducted by Specsavers, one of the most significant reasons for poor uptake of dental and optical services is a lack of awareness among PRSI cardholders. The poll found that just 7% of participants understand exactly what benefits are open to them. Just under 30% have never claimed any PRSI benefits.

In light of the findings, Irish dentists have urged patients to find out more about the scheme and encouraged the government to introduce measures to ensure cardholders are aware of their entitlements.
