Health officials in North Yorkshire have claimed that they have “turned a corner”, after thousands of new NHS dental places were made available in Whitby.

Whitby was identified as an underserved area, after figures revealed that a large proportion of people were struggling to register with an NHS dentist. In recent years, the NHS has plighted money into North Yorkshire and thousands of new places have made available; recently, 2,000 places were made available at Whitby Dental Care, at St Hilda’s Business Centre and more than 7,000 patients in the region have been allocated a place since the beginning of the financial year.

Nearly 6 million pounds have been spent on dental services in North Yorkshire since 2008 and a further 2.3 million is available for investment next year.

Lorraine Naylor, assistant director of primary care for North Yorkshire and York Primary Care Trust, said that the trust was very pleased with the new services and the increase in patient numbers across the region; however, she said that health officials were aware that further investment was required to reduce waiting lists, with 10,000 people currently waiting for a place in York and Selby.
