A man who registered as a new patient at a dental practice in Selkirk has been jailed after being found guilty of robbery. Christopher Griffin registered with Selkirk Dental Practice days before he stole a purse from the practice.

Mr Griffin had previously been a patient at West Port Surgery, but joined the register at Selkirk Dental Practice just minutes before he committed the robbery. In court at Selkirk Sheriff Court he admitted the theft, which took place on June 5th. Tessa Bradley, prosecuting, said that the theft was valued at £100 with no recovery.

Mr Griffin, 28, of Raeburn Meadow in Selkirk, was jailed for 108 days.

Ms Bradley explained that Mr Griffin had visited the practice with his partner at around 2.40pm and asked the receptionist about seeing an emergency dentist. After he was asked to complete a registration form, Mr Griffin asked about the location of the toilet and he was directed towards the second floor.

The bathroom is next to the staff room. The receptionist was slightly suspicious about Mr Griffin’s behaviour and went up to the staff room to find clothes strewn around the floor. On closer inspection it was discovered that a purse was missing, which contained a passport, cards and cash.

Mr Griffin fled the scene but was caught by police officers when trying to run off the day after the incident.
