The 2011 James Hull Clinical Conference

Sample News Big

Many expert speakers from a range of dentistry fields came together at the 2011 James Hull Clinical Conference, to discuss new up and coming issues within the dental community. One of the most eye opening talks came from Dr. Simon Hocken, a prominent individual of Breathe Business. During his speech, Dr. Hocken spoke of an “avalanche of change” coming across the dental world.

Some of the most notable of his points was his worry over the influx of inexperienced and newly qualified dentists leaving their studies; increased competition, partly brought on by this influx; the increase in costs of training; and –perhaps controversially in today’s economical climate- the worry that dental fees aren’t increasing quickly enough.

As well as Dr. Simon Hocken, talks were given by Anil Shrestha, the longest serving dentist of JHA, having been with the company for almost 20 years since 1993. He spoke mainly about his experiences while working at JHA and attempted to pass on some of these experiences to those in the audience.

Another prominent speaker was Alan Cohen, the dental services, DPL. During his talks, Cohen spoke of his “Top Ten ways to reduce risk”, as well as the most prominent risk being revealed as bad record keeping!

A thought provoking talk was also given by the former head and president of the British Endodontic Society, Andrew Hyatt concerning the failure of dental procedures, particularly canal failure. He ended by arguing that the difficulty in controlling infection is the main problem and that this, as well as warning that chronic dental infections may soon become a much larger problem than it currently is, as well as urging a need for an increase in awareness of chronic dental infections.

Following the talks, there was an award ceremony in which Dr Ameed Abdul-Hamid and Saud Bin Majed Al-Duwaish were awarded for their services for the Arabic Centre for Oral Health, a new Oral Health studio that is due to open later this year in London.
