Tesco to launch dental surgery in Scottish store

UK supermarket chain Tesco is attempting to become the first supermarket in Scotland to provide shoppers with dental treatment in their stores. The supermarket giant is hoping to open a dental surgery in its store at Silverburn shopping centre, Pollok. The company has already sent in a planing application to the Glasgow City Council to see if it is possible to convert some of the store space into a three-chair dental practice.

The move comes after supermarket rivals Sainsbury’s became the fist store to open an in-store dental clinic in 2008. The clinic, opened in Sale, Manchester, went on to be a big success after being inundated with costumers due to the low prices compared to the NHS and has helped thousands who couldn’t receive NHS treatment in the area.

Figures in Glasgow show that it has one of the worst dental health records in Scotland, with around three out of four children under the age of five having problems with tooth decay. A Tesco spokesman was quoted as stating; ‘We are exploring new options for our Silverburn store.’

The board at Glasgow City Council reviewed the Tesco planning application earlier this month and they are now considering whether the proposed changes are possible. The move also accompanies the Silverburn shopping centre’s twenty million pound general expansion, which is expected to be given planning permission soon.
