A survey carried out by Aquafresh has revealed that milk teeth are one of the UK’s most valuable commodities.

The survey showed that there has been a ten-fold increase in the value of milk teeth, with the average cost of a milk tooth for parents increasing from 10 pence to £1; this represents higher levels of growth than petrol.

The survey revealed that 70 per cent of parents are likely to give their child at least £1 per milk tooth, despite the recession hitting families hard; this equates to around £24 per child, which is the same cost as admission to Legoland.

Losing a tooth is not the only way children are adding to their pocket money; many parents also admitted to paying their child a small sum of money to get them to clean their teeth every day; one in five people admit to paying their child £1 per day and 1 in 50 parents said that they gave their child £10 per day to encourage them to clean their teeth, costing an incredible total of £3,600 per year.

Dentists recommend brushing twice a day for at least two minutes each time; children should be encouraged to brush their teeth from a very early age and parents should aim to take their child to the dentist for regular check-ups from the age of 12 months old. Dentists recommend playing games and rewarding good behaviour to encourage children to brush their teeth and using especially designed children’s oral hygiene products, such as brushes decorated with pictures of their favourite cartoon characters, can also be very helpful.
