Survey Reveals Plymouth Residents Need To Brush Up On Oral Hygiene

A survey has revealed that almost half of Plymouth residents do not brush their teeth twice a day.

The survey, which was conducted by the SimplyHealth Advisory Research Panel, also found that a third of people have used another person’s toothbrush and 6 out of 10 of those surveyed have seen blood in their spit. The survey highlights the need for improved oral hygiene in Plymouth.

A spokesman for the SimplyHealth Advisory Research Panel said that the survey highlights a severe lack of commitment to oral hygiene, which could have very serious implications, especially as there are research studies emerging all the time connecting poor oral health to an increased risk of serious medical conditions, including heart disease and strokes.

Bleeding gums is an early warning sign of gum disease, a very common, yet preventable, illness, which can result in tooth loss and the development of painful abscesses if left untreated.

In light of the findings, experts from the research panel are advising people to adopt better oral hygiene habits; a good daily oral hygiene routine should include brushing the teeth twice a day for at least two minutes each time, flossing and rinsing with mouthwash. Regular dental visits, every 6-12 months, are also extremely important and patients are advised to make the most of their check-ups by paying attention and talking to their dentist about oral health issues during their time in the dental chair.
