Surprise Foods That Could Damage Your Teeth

Sample News Big

Research carried out at the University Dental Hospital in Manchester has revealed that foods and drinks that most of us consider to be healthy could in fact be very damaging for our teeth.

Researchers found that herbal teas contributed to tooth staining and also had the potential to destroy the protective enamel surfaces of the teeth. Once the enamel is damaged, it cannot be restored and the tooth is left susceptible to damage and decay. Researchers found that drinking teas such as blackcurrant and raspberry tea increased enamel dissolution.

Dentists also warned about eating certain types of fruit on a regular basis, especially citrus fruits, which are very acidic and can wear down the enamel. Fruit is very good for your general health but it is best to stick to more traditional fruits, such as Cox’s apples, if you are looking to protect your teeth, according to dentist Dr Uchenna Okoye.

Dr Joe Oliver, from The Welbeck Clinic also advised patients against brushing their teeth after meals, as sugary and acidic foods cause the enamel to soften for a period of time and therefore brushing during this time can cause damage to the enamel. It is best to wait around one hour after eating to brush, especially if you have eaten foods that are acidic or have high sugar content.

The research team wanted to stress that it is not essential to avoid drinking or eating any foods, but it is a good idea to moderate your intake of foods and drinks that are acidic or sugary, as these can increase the risk of oral health diseases.
