Sunderland dentist Michael Oliver swapped his dental surgery for a trip to the village show last weekend to provide an award for the art competition.

Mr Oliver, from Olivers Dental Studio, attended the East Herrington show to give out a trophy to the winner of the children’s category, which was supported by the practice. The practice mascot, Ollie the Lion was also in attendance and provided a big hit with the children. As well as posing for photographs and getting involved in activities with the kids, Ollie was also there to promote good oral health and encourage youngsters to take good care of their teeth and gums.

The East Herrington Village Show has been a focal point in the community calendar since the 19th century and in the last few years attendance has been very good.

Speaking before the show, show chairman and former Mayor of Sunderland, Les Scott, said that he was hoping for a good turnout and praying for the weather to hold out.

During the event, numerous activities took place, including a vegetable growing competition, photography and arts and crafts.

Denise Robertson, This Morning agony aunt and proud Northerner, was also at the show to present an award.
