A dental nurse from Sunderland has plenty to smile about after being shortlisted for a national dentistry award.

Jen Browell, 20, from Tunstall, has been shortlisted for the Dental Nurse of the Year award at the 2021 Mydentist Excellence Awards. Jen has made it to the top four, beating off competition from over 800 entries.

Like all dental professionals, Jen has had to contend with unprecedented challenges this year but the award nomination has put a spring in her step. In the last 18 months, practices have closed and then reopened with stringent restrictions in place.

Teams are working under intense pressure and coping with huge backlogs, which have built up as a result of lockdowns and limits on patient numbers.

Based at Oliver’s House dental practice in Durham Road, East Herrington, Jen was nominated for the award by her colleague, dentist Salma Ainine. Salma put Jen’s name forward for the title of Dental Nurse of the Year because she is always wiling to go the extra mile for her patients and colleagues and nothing is ever too much for her.

Jen always makes sure that her patients are relaxed, she is incredibly caring and compassionate and she takes everything in her stride. She is only 20 years old but Salma said that she has “started her career with a bang.” Recently, Jen contracted Covid-19 but her colleagues said that she was still texting from her bed to check that everything was OK at the practice.

Jen said that she was in shock when she heard about the shortlist and added that she is extremely grateful to have a job that she loves.
