Study to Examine the Impact of the Dental Drill on Hearing

Sample News Big

The dental drill strikes fear to the heart of most patients but could it also be causing something more than psychological damage to dental professionals themselves? A study is due to be carried out to determine whether the noise created by the dental drill is harmful to dentists’ hearing.

Krisztina Bucsi Johnson received a grant of $5,000 to study the effects of the dental drill on hearing and is currently conducting her research at East Tennessee State University as part of her doctoral thesis.

The East Tennessee State University student received funding from the National Hearing Conservation Association Foundation and her study will involve measuring a dentist’s hearing at the start of a day by carrying out tests and comparing it to the results of tests conducted at the end of the day.

Krisztina Bucsi Johnson is currently looking for dentists to volunteer to participate in her study, which will be undertaken at dental offices in the local area.
