Study set to explore dental health problems in Appalachia

Sample News Big

Researchers at West Virginia University have been offered funding from the National Institute of Health; the 2.8 million dollar grant will cover a research project, which will focus on oral health and oral diseases amongst children from the Appalachia region.

In the past, a study indicated that children aged between three and six years old in the region suffered from the worst standards of oral health in the whole country. The study indicated that cavities were prevalent amongst the children.

The new study, which will be carried out by a team at West Virginia University, will focus on younger children and will involve very small children aged between birth and two years. The project will seek to find out the causes of preventable dental health issues, explore education and provision in the area and investigate equality in the region.

The results of the study will hopefully indicate problems, which can then be sorted out with the help of health services and educational initiatives. The goal is to encourage better standards of oral health in the Appalachian region and ensure children benefit from good oral health in the future.
