Study Links Mental Health Conditions to Increased Risk of Dental Problems

A study carried out in Australia has linked mental health disorders to an increased risk of dental problems.

The study, which was conducted by researchers at the University of Queensland, found that people who suffer from severe mental health conditions, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, are three times more likely to experience dental health problems and suffer tooth loss.

The research team believes that the standards of oral health are so poor amongst people with mental health disorders because they are unable to prioritise oral health, as in many cases they may have problems with unemployment or homelessness. Some anti-depressants have also been found to increase the risk of dental health conditions and some people may feel uncomfortable or worried about seeing a dentist.

Researchers believe that patients should be asked about their dental health during the treatment process for mental health conditions and they added that free dental care would be extremely beneficial for patients who are receiving treatment for mental health disorders.
