A dental practice in Stortford is offering local residents free oral cancer screening.

The sessions will take place between 8am and 7pm at Hockerill Dental Practice on Wednesday 18th and Wednesday 25th September and appointments are available to book by calling 01279 6522400.

The mouth cancer screening initiative was launched by Dr Mani Oppeman, who believes it is extremely important to educate the nation about mouth cancer and encourage people to have regular checks with their dentist.

Dentists have a very important role to play in the detection of mouth cancer because patients tend to visit their dentist for regular routine checks, while most tend to visit their doctor only when they are ill or they notice symptoms of an illness. Dentists can identify changes in the mouth and refer patients for treatment before the disease becomes more advanced and this is really important as early detection increases chances of survival by up to 90 per cent.

Pat Jones, People’s Ambassador for the Mouth Cancer Foundation, is particularly keen to raise awareness of mouth cancer after losing her daughter to the disease at the age of just 23 years old. Pat said that Mouth Cancer Awareness Day is an ideal opportunity to teach people about the causes and symptoms of mouth cancer and encourage people to get talking about the disease and visit their dentist for routine check-ups.

Dentist Dr Philip Lewis said that early detection is really important and the screening sessions are an opportunity for people to get checked out and learn more about this deadly disease, which is becoming increasingly common in the UK.
