Stornoway Children Have Their Teeth Checked As Part Of Childsmile Week

Sample News Big

Hundreds of children in Stornoway had their teeth checked last week as part of an annual Childsmile event.

Approximately 450 children had their teeth examined by dental teams last week as part of the Western Isles Childsmile event, which is designed to promote good oral health and encourage youngsters to take good care of their teeth and gums.

Hundreds of children have also booked appointments for the school holidays, as the Childsmile event moves around the Western Isles. The Stornoway event took place last week and each dental clinic will host a week-long event, as the annual event is celebrated over the course of the summer holidays in July and August.

Appointments will be available in North Uist from the 15th July, Benbecula from 22nd July, Barra from the 29th July and South Uist from the 5th August.

Each child who takes place in a Childsmile event will get a free dental screening, as well as information about teeth cleaning, healthy eating and preventative dental treatment.

Children will also be encouraged to join in activities and games.

Morag MacKinnon, Oral Health Improvement Coordinator at NHS Western Isles, encouraged parents to register their child with a dentist as soon as possible after birth; dentists recommend regular dental checks from the age of 6-12 months.
