A Stockton dental practice will offer free mouth cancer screening in December, it has been confirmed.

Cleveland Cosmetic and Dental Implant Clinic in Fairfield will provide free oral cancer screening between the 2nd and 13th December to support Mouth Cancer Action Month, which will run throughout November.

Mr Mike Heads, principal dentist, said that everyone at the practice is delighted to be involved with the campaign, which saves lives every year. Mouth Cancer Action Month is organised by the British Dental Health Foundation and is backed by surgeries all over the UK.

The screening sessions are quick and painless; dentists use Velscope technology to look for early warning signs and changes in the oral tissue. Screening is a means of getting people to look out for changes in their mouth and learn more about oral cancer, as well as helping to ensure that cases are diagnosed at an early stage when the disease is treatable.

Early detection increases the chance of survival from around 50 per cent to up to 90 per cent and dentists are encouraging as many people as possible to take advantage of oral cancer screening next month.

Mouth cancer kills more than 2,000 people each year in the UK and statistics show that the disease is becoming increasingly prevalent. Patients are urged to attend regular heck-ups and watch out for changes in the mouth, red or white patches and ulcers that take longer than 3 weeks to heal.
