The NHS is enlisting the help of some Spanish dentists to clear the backlog of patients.
The Derry Journal reports Alderman William Hay is backing the scheme to bring six Spanish dentists to the Western Board to alleviate lengthy waiting lists.
Mr Hay said he knew people that travelled “60, 70 or even 80 miles” to find a dentist and added that children and the most vulnerable people in society were going without dental care.
A Western Health and Social Care Board (SCB) spokesperson confirmed that the Board was working hard to the dental crisis which was hitting the area.
The spokesperson added that Minister Michael McGimpsey had announced plans to provide extra dental services through a private company,
Mr McGimpsey has also promised that several dental surgeries would be opening in the area during December 2009.
