A dentist from South Yorkshire has been awarded thousands of pounds for a new research project.

Dr Steven Mulligan, a general dental practitioner, has been awarded £164,000 from the Shirley Glasstone Hughes Trust Fund. The money will be used to fund a research project, which aims to determine if filling materials that contain plastic are detrimental to the environment.

The project is due to start in January 2014 and Dr Mulligan will be working with Professor Nicolas Martin, from the School of Clinical Dentistry at the University of Sheffield.

The research study is designed to determine if filling materials, which contain plastic, contribute to environmental pollution. The study will determine the risk of pollution and also gauge public perception. It also aims to get the views of dental professionals with regard to the risk posed to the environment by dental materials.

Professor Liz Kay, chair of the Shirley Glasstone Hughes Trust Fund’s management committee, said that the impact of dental materials has been a subject of great interest over the last few years. Therefore, the information obtained by the study will be of great importance going forward.

Grants from the trust fund have been used to find studies into the implications of fear on making clinical decisions and inequalities in oral health in the past.
