South Tyneside Dentists Cut Waiting Times for Children

Health bosses have praised dentists in South Tyneside for successfully cutting waiting times for children.

In 2009 youngsters in the area were faced with a lengthy wait for treatment, which in some cases, was up to three years for orthodontic services. Now, children are waiting up to four months for treatment.

A review carried out by South Tyneside Primary Care Trust in 2009 suggested that more specialist dentists were required.

Health chiefs have also announced that they are planning to continue the good work and yesterday it was announced that a new dental contract has been awarded to The Dean Road Dental Practice in South Shields. The five year contract, which is worth £662,000, will enable 1,100 patients to be assessed and 560 to be treated every year.

Councillor Ernest Gibson said that the situation for children in South Tyneside was very worrying in 2009, but he admitted that there have been significant improvements since and he said yesterday that the future is bright for dental services in the region.
