A survey has revealed that patients in the West are happy to stay with the same dentist, with patient satisfaction rates considerably higher for existing practices than new surgeries.

The GP Patient Survey, which surveyed the opinions of 510,000 people across the UK, found that satisfaction levels were higher among those who had visited the same dental practice over a period of time. In the West, 86 percent of people said that their experience was either ‘very good’ or ‘fairly good’ when visiting a dentist they had been to before. This figure was considerably higher than satisfaction rates for new practices, which came out at just 63 percent.

Just 2 percent of people rated their experience visiting the same dentist as ‘very poor’, in comparison to 14 percent of people visiting a surgery for the first time.

The survey also revealed that access figures were positive, with 94 percent of people in the South West able to make an appointment with their dentist over the past 12 months. Just 4 percent were unable to get an appointment, while the other 2 percent of respondents could not remember.

Access was best in South Gloucestershire, Somerset, Swindon and Herefordshire, where 97 percent of people were able to get an appointment. Figures in Gloucestershire were slightly lower at 95 percent.
