Skegness Dental Nurses Visit Local Schoolchildren

Sample News Big

Dental nurses from Skegness’ mydentist practices visited schoolchildren recently as part of a campaign run by the local government. Lincolnshire Smiles aims to promote good oral health practices among children and reduce rates of decay.

Dental nurses Lily Stroud and Stacey Yarnold visited Seathorne Primary School on Friday 29th April to talk to children about brushing their teeth and watching how much sugary they eat. The duo was armed with dental kits, which were handed out to the children and they had all kinds of fun games and activities up their sleeves.

The nurses were hoping to show the kids that going to the dentist is nothing to worry about and educate them about how to clean their teeth properly. During the informal sessions, the children were encouraged to ask questions and take part in quizzes to find out more about healthy eating and oral hygiene practices.

Stacey said that often, parents ask why their children suffer from decay, because they think they have a healthy diet. But constant grazing and eating and drinking food and drinks such as juices, smoothies and dried fruit can actually be very harmful for children’s teeth. Many so-called healthy products are actually laden with sugar, in addition to being acidic. When you eat all day, this means that your enamel is under constant acid attack and this increases the risk of cavities. Stacey also added that there is no fluoride added to the water in Skegness and therefore, the only fluoride children get comes from toothpaste.

Stacey and Lily are part of a team of dental professionals working with local councils to try and improve standards of oral health among children and lower the number of kids affected by dental decay. The visits will hopefully show children that going to the dentist doesn’t have to be a scary experience and encourage them to adopt healthy eating habits at home.
